Good morning everyone!

Just getting back into nitro RC. I had to sell all of my stuff 6 years ago when life took over. A couple months ago, I purchased a 5-year-old T-maxx 2.5r from a friend for $150. It had sat for 4 years but after taking it completely apart, re-greasing everything & some work on the engine I got it running again. Of course as I learned when I was in this hobby before nothing is good enough & I need to start upgrading. So I stripped it down & sold everything but the engine (muffler, ez start mount etc.), servo mounts & battery & receiver box. I purchased all brand new extended chassis T-Maxx 3.3 parts & built a whole new truck. I purchased the E-maxx differentials instead because I read that they were stronger & I purchased Revo 17mm wheels & hubs because I liked them.

So now, I have a brand new stock T-maxx 3.3 roller with revo wheels, a spectrum dc3x radio & receiver with a 2.5 r engine. So I figured I need to upgrade that to.

I have narrowed my choices down to:
(Keep in mind I have a Robinson Racing clutch bell, & aftermarket 3-shoe clutch)

- Traxxas 3.3 (I’ve heard a lot of bad about this engine. I would prefer to stay away)
- Dynamite .19 Mach 2 (Heard a lot of good but it seems to good to be true for the price)
- Losi 3.4 (Would prefer this engine!)

I know there are better engines but they are just not in my price range. Got a family & gotta keep the spending to a minimum.

I would prefer the Losi 3.4 but I have read this is not a direct drop in.

-What needs to be done to make the 3.4 work?
-Can I use the RRR clutch bell & 3-shoe clutch?
-What about the crankshaft, it does looks longer & does not have the notch for the clips to
hold the clutch bell on? The crankshaft of the 2.5r is already so close to the transmission
that you can't fit a piece of paper between the two.
-I have an aftermarket exhaust but a stock exhaust header, will this work?

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

if you search ebay you could get a picco .26 for around $150-$100

Yeah I know but I really don't want to upgrade my whole drive line. If I get the .26 I'd have to upgrade all of the plastic gears & change all of the drive shafts over to steel cvd's. I'm just looking to spend about $100-$150 on a motor, drop it in & drive.

Thanks for the suggestion!

You would need a spring mounted exhaust header to fit on the Losi.
The flywheel, rrp bell and clutch you are using should fit the engine, if the crankshaft is too long it can be cut and a 3mm button head screw used to secure the clutch bell if there is enough room (which there should be).

Oh ok, I did not know you can cut the crankshaft.

About the header, There is not much room behind the motor to the shock tower.
Do you (or anyone else) know of a spring mounted header that I can use?
Or am I going to have to buy one & modify some things to make it work?

Thanks!

I’m sure you could find a header to clear the tower, with the correct gasket the O.S. .21TM header for the tmaxx would probably work.

two small changes to a T-Max i did. the first one was a longer arm on the servo pulling the throttle lever, and mounted more to the outside. second flip the 90 degree bell crank, putting the longer arm to go to the engine. gets faster res pounce on the throttle. but not a longer arm for the break, it will lose power. NOTE: test the throttle system to be sure it doesn't lock open. allso i ALLWAYS use springs.

I've owned 2 Dynamites over the years and they both were solid powerplants that were well worth the $. Had a .19 (can't recall exactly which 1) in my original Maxx and I currently have the Big Red .28 in my MGT. The .19 was excellent in the Maxx and the Big Red is a bit much for the MGT which makes it that much more fun to drive!!!

+ 1 ON the dynamite .19 eng. They are great, have one in my Jato with THS pipe and it flies, and tunes easy.

do you know if the BIG RED engine will just drop right into a tmaxx without messin around with things to get it to fit?

Got my hands on a used (10 tanks through it) Losi 3.4 engine with the manifold & exhaust on ebay. Looking forward to seeing how it fits.

I'll post some pictures & maybe even a video when I get it in and running.

with the picco u dont have to upgrade drive shafts and gears... u just have to make sure your slipper is adjusted properly.

Buku Clutch $60
New Era Mount $40
Picco .26 JLR + dynamite 053 Exhaust $250
exhaust adapter $18

*** thing about living in australia is i have to pay an extra 70-80$ shipping for all that... :(

That's just to much money for me to spend right now. I got this engine with the exhaust and header for $75. It also has a losi roto start so I don't have to fit an ez start on there. I'm going from a 3.3 to this engine. I won't have to upgrade drive shafts or anything, I just gotta fit it in and with the header that may be a problem.

Got a Losi 3.4 engine with exhaust, header and spin start for $80. I had to cut the crankshaft back to fit behind the transmission (Thanks Snook Man). I put on a new 3 shoe clutch from a 3.3 and a RRP clutch bell. As you can see the header did not fit to easy but it works for now. I'm gonna keep my eyes open for a new header. I ran it for about 10 minutes today before it started raining.

Looks like you got her running good. IMO, Losi's 3.4 has more power and holds a better tune than the 3.3.

Thanks! Yeah, I am so happy with this engine. First time in a long time that I was out driving the truck and did not come home frustrated! To bad I did'nt get any video of the higher speed runs.

Below are some more videos of my tmaxx with the losi 3.4 engine. I put on a wheelie bar. The first video is some high speed runs, the second is some more high speed runs with wheelies and a crash. The 3rd video is some high speed runs and wheelies after the crash. I actually crashed it into a curb again, this time just about ripping the front wheel off. I'll post some pictures of the aftermath.
