You need an outerwear pull start and air filter cover for sure.
There are also vent holes in the back of the engine that suck in a lot of poop. I have a mod you can do that will take care of this but it involves removing the engine.

Use a good silicon and glue some fiberglass screen over the holes.
After that, cut the extra air filter cover that came with the Baja and Zip-tie it on. Nothing gets through and it still cools just fine.

I stuck some pieces of block foam in those side pieces. Helps a lot.
 
In the long run, its cheaper then building an 8th scale buggy kit.
Just do it.

I wish hehe...shoot I can't even afford tires for the motorcycle.
