I kep hearing all this talk about using and not using temps to tune your engine. What is best? I have the MIP_ onboard unit and I like the fact that I have a temp measured a a consistent point to compare while tuning.

That said, if one can just lean it out until it slows down and then back off an 1/8th turn or something, that would be good info too.

What is your max power tuning method and do you/how do you incorporate a gage into your tuning?

Please throw your tuning secrets down here!!

ITs a combination of Power, smoke from exhaust, and temp. If you only tune by the temp gun you could drive yourself insane. I prefere to not run my engine over 250.. some would say that is mild. But I look at temp combined with life of the eninge combined with power there are lots of factors. I have found most engines will run well between 225-250 where I live. Some guys run 100 hotter but I don't see a need. ...X

Well I have an OS and they say tune for performance not temperature. I like my temp guage alot though, even though they say that I still want to try to keep my engine under the 250 degree mark and still make good power. The on board guages are usually off by a few degrees so be careful you dont go to far using that guage, if you know someone with an infrared gun try to see how your temp guage compares to the temps with the gun. Always make sure you have a nice trail of smoke under acceleration.

Moderate with your temp gun, and tune with your ears. You can tell how well the engine is tune by the sound of it. I keep my engines running below 230.

I agree with Akina. I like to tune by sound and performance. If the car sounds like it is winding out, but its not going anywhere, you probably are too rich.

sound and performance
i only use temp to do routine checks during and after my runs to make sure alls ok.
that being said i can tune for my life.

I will tell you the negative of NOT having a temp gauge. If you tune for performance and your vehicle is just SCREAMIN beyond anything its ever done and the needles happen to be set rich, you could be overheating due to an air leak. Air leaks can make a mill run VERY lean. VERY lean running for lets just say 3 tanks or so, can trash your piston, sleeve and possibly the con-rod. Trust me, my O.S. was performing EXTREMELY well, even smoke out of the exhaust. But 450 degrees killed it quickly!

All 4 should be used, looks, sound, performance and temp.

perfectly said ... thats why you are a mod

LOL! Correction - Woodie is loving my wife these days......

Man C your wife has been used more than a public water fountain...X

I totally suck at tuning. This, however, does not surprise me as I just started.

My temp gauge says I'm running around 280-290. My needles, however, are set so rich it's almost at break in settings. I think maybe the primer pump problem I just discovered has something to do with it. I'm sure if the engine can't get the fuel it needs, its going to lean out, make it hot, etc.

My limited experience on the subject tells me one should tune for performance and then use the temp gauge to keep himself in check.

As far as Christian's wife.... she should hook up with my neighbors... they run an escort service (they seriously do).

That's my neighbor's website. I poop you not. My neighbors run an escort service. The one that calls herself "Paige" is the madam herself and hence my neighbor.

and yeah the umm "happy ending" type

I don't tune with a temp gauge... mainly because I don't have one. I use my ear, how much smoke comes out, and performance...

As for air leaks... I killed my last motor becuase of an air leak, it was even set nice and rich, with a thick blue cloud coming out.

Just one reason to get a temp gauge! If your last mill was leaking then you should have picked up the temp SPIKE with the gauge. Radio Shack dumps them for 35 once in a great while but 40-45 is the norm.

Just a thought... I wont run without one.

Hmmm... I've got a few friends who work for radio shack... 20% off.

(The same friends that once put one of theirs{some little electric 20mph throw away} up against my CV-RX'd Nitro4-tec... Funny funny hah hah...)
