N301's 2024 season is under way. Like last year, we wanted to start off with a Cash Days/Cookout kind of thing. Unlike last year, we had a good turnout with only 2 racers missing due to work/family obligations.
The weather of course was not good. It was 39 degrees when I packed up my truck, and never got out of the low 50's the entire day. Overcast, with only one brief moment of "sun" (more like a hazy blob). Pollen covered everything, and despite an hour of blowing the road clean, there was little traction to be had in cold, dusty conditions.
We had 9 cars in the Cash Days event, from 8 drivers (I entered both Hissed Off and Invader 2). We decided to allow brushless cars to enter alongside of nitro, so a couple of guys ran their brushless instead, making it 5 nitro vs 4 brushless cars.
There was a lot of traction problems due to the pollen and cold, but still some decent hits made, with guys in the 2.4's a few times. I was having difficulty finding a good tune, had to run rich because of the cold air, so I went a little extra just to be on the safe side and even take a little power out. In my first race, in the video below, Invader 2 launched decently, but nearly got run down on the big end as the car was strangely bogging out (or something).
There were a lot of good races as the event progressed. Some guys were struggling with their engines. Some guys struggled with traction.
Hissed Off was real consistent, but not putting up the best numbers due to traction and tuning rich. But, it was good enough to get into the final round. I was waiting on hitting nitrous until 30 feet out most times.
In the end, both of my cars made the semi-finals, which was all-nitro at this point (yay for nitro!). Hissed Off had a bye, so Invader 2 squared off against Co-captain Moe for what would be the deciding race for the pot. Invader 2 was definitely hurt, but I got very lucky when Moe's Kong 2 car flamed out about 10 feet out. I offered to run it back, but he just couldn't get his engine right again.
It turned out that Invader 2's bogging was actually the transmission jamming up, which I strongly suspect that it's a set pin that has backed out and is dragging against the casing. Had that happen once before, so I'll be tearing that down this week to see what's up. Pretty lucky I didn't demolish it actually.
Team list racing starts in 3 weeks, and hopefully the weather will be warmer and we can start swinging for some good ET's.
