both batteries liked show they are 2 cell=7.4v why go backwards to fm? when 2.4 now adays is less for entire new radio and rx that just the rx in a fm then you gotta make sure you have correct crystal
after adding up new bat charger radio or fm rx I'm thinking a entire nib rc car will be cheaper
and further I would not trust that motor with the bubbly motor wires

It is already a 2.4ghz system. This is his radio.

Yeah, it should do ok, but what is the KV of the motor? Never heard of that brand though.
Tbf the esc isn’t in stock so won’t order from them. There are some cheap 60a brushless ones on eBay but I’m hesitant to buy them as they’re only about £17 new...
the motor says 2950kv on it bud.
What do the amp ratings of the esc mean, could I use a lower amp one or will it burn out? The one on there is a Photon 60a 2.1W
Do you think the burned wire on the esc was burned from the receiver rather than the esc, as when I popped it open the wire inside was fine? Just from the seal out over it was burned?

When a wire burns it is because the point with the most resistance couldn't handle the load going through it. It finds the weakest link in the chain, which may be right in the center of that wire. Just because the heat didn't make it all the way to the ESC doesn't mean it is not the culprit. It may be fine, but you would have to check it and see.

The amp rating on the ESC is the Amp load the ESC can safely push.

The motor wires look fine tbh mate it’s the black wire from the esc to receiver that is burned out

Ok how would I check the esc or isn’t that gonna be beyond me? And am I correct in thinking I’ll have to replace with another 60a esc only then? There’s a cheap one that has plenty of reviews here, may take a chance on one of these

The reviews seem to be pretty good on that ESC, with people running it on similar setups. So yeah, should be ok. I am not familiar with it to say anything other than that.

As far as checking it I think tnt mentioned how to check it earlier in this thread? I am not an electronics guru myself and would have to ask for help from the guys here if I were to check one. Yeah, post #7

Man I must have glossed over that post too quick thanks again Wicked mate, so I reckon £100 is gonna be the budget for this as that’s half the price of it new and as I never paid for it I’m prepared to go that deep into it lol
Plus I like the vw bug shell and the boys should be good with this one! May even get the program card with it if I can get it in the budget

I just got an HTRC C240 duo for $70 usd, it’s working really well for me so far, I recommend it.

unplug main battery 1st
do you have a charger to charge that battery ?
if you do charge it
do you have a volt meter also called a vom .voltage ohm meter.
if you do id check esc to see if bec is working... you will need to set vom to dc on like 10 volt range. does it read voltage when turned on..if so then id replace rx plug..like 5 volts or so on rx esc plug wire black and red wire.
@tntpoof Ok bud, so if I did this right (checked voltage between red and black wires that come from the esc in the red/white/black loom) I got 5.05 volts. Does this suggest the esc will be ok?

I’ll check see what price that is over here bud cheers!

I get what you’re saying about buying the parts to transplant I’m just not sure I’d end up with another electric one yet-looking at the price of them new they’re around £200 on eBay still so may be worth spending it anyway.
So what do I do with the battery then bud, how can I drop the voltage when I can’t run the car?

It’s not really visibly puffed out, but if I put it on my bench and press one side you can see the slight bulging by the gap on the opposite side to where I push
This is the charger I have for it bud, don’t think it has a discharge option but we have specialist battery disposal points all over the uk so maybe they can handle it
You you have a place that recycles batteries you could just take it to them and drop it off. Otherwise you need to wire up some kind of load to the main battery wires. I use a small 30mm fan and an LED w/a resistor. You can use an automotive light bulb also as others have mentioned. Anything that will get the pack down to 2V or less. Those light bulbs get very hot just FYI.

Once they puff its time to get rid of them. They may work for awhile like that but they become more of a fire hazard and without even knowing the history of this one Id ditch it.

How would I connect that to the 3 wires bud? Red+blue for positive and black for negative?
If you're discharging it to get rid of it you dont worry about the balance plug. Just discharge it via the main batt leads. It doesn't need to be even.

So what’s the recommendation for a good and cost effective battery and charger set up bud? And is it worth risking trying the esc again with a new receiver or is that going to want replacing?
THIS is the cheapest lipo charger Id recommend to anyone.

And if I replace the receiver I can keep the controller I already have here?
Yes, you can bind the new receiver to the transmitter.

Thanks for the recommendation and info I’ll go check out some prices now- makes sense this battery is dead as it says 20c on it!
If you're using a 5000mAh or larger battery then anything 30C or higher will be fine for this application.

This is available at my local shop, 40c but different balance wiring?
https://northeastmodelcentre.co.uk/...-only/lipo/voltz-3200-hard-case-lipo-carnage/
How about this one bud, more mAh but looks the same wiring set up
https://northeastmodelcentre.co.uk/...shop-only/lipo/voltz-5000-mah-7-4v-lipo-pack/
This lipos are stupidly expensive especially for no name brand batts. I would not buy these. Id look for something off of Hobbyking or Amazon. Turnigy, Zippy, Zeee, Hoovo, HRB, POW Power, etc. If you find something on one of those two websites thats not one of these post it up here and we can give ya an opinion on it.
https://northeastmodelcentre.co.uk/...shop-only/lipo/voltz-5000-mah-7-4v-lipo-pack/
And how do I tell which esc will work for this RC, there’s a few in the local shop;
https://northeastmodelcentre.co.uk/?s=Esc
None of these ESCs are suitable.

Tbh bud it doesn’t say if either of those I linked are 2s or not I’ll have to ring the shop in the morning
Just FYI, The nominal voltage for a lipo is 3.7V/C so if a lipo doesn't say 2S specifically on it it will say what the voltage is. So a 7.4V lipo is a 2S. 3S would be 11.1V, 4S would be 14.8V and so on.

Found this HobbyKing esc which looks to be the same rating as the one on the car, but less than half the price
https://hobbyking.com/en_us/hobbyki...uLeu33VNZysxjVc2BoCLN4QAvD_BwE&___store=en_us
This ESC is about the same spec and quality as the one that was in it. Will it work? Probably but THIS is a waaaaaay better ESC. Granted its twice the price but its five times better than the other ESC.

Something else to take in to consideration. If you do end up getting deeper into electrics you're probably gonna want a Programming box for your ESC to make it way easier to program. Well if you stick with the same manufacturer of ESC then you'll only need one programming box. Hobbywing is a known good budget brand.

Tbh I’ll be spending a bit over £100 on this going off the parts I’ve seen so far wicked mate, so yeah I’ll be taking budget into account for this. Not to mention buying bits for the Nitro cars I’ve got too... Maybe if I get more knowledgable in the electric side of things then I would step up and get some better equipment, but my first interest is nitro (as a mechanic I love the little engine shop and the smell/noise they make) so I’m not sure where this will take me yet tbh!!!
Just do what ya can when ya can. I understand that nitro is your main thing and you dont want to spend a lot of electric not knowing if youll like it or not but theres certain lines you dont really want to dip under imo. Worst case scenario put it on the back burner and buy one piece at a time until you have everything to start the project. Most nitro guys end up loving electrics as well as nitros so you probably end up liking both. :)

As for the existing ESC, plug the battery in to it and see if it will even turn on. If you get leds flashing then you could try replacing the melted wires and connector and give it a shot. Worst case scenario you fry a £12 receiver but thats a third of the price of a 120A hobbywing ESC so thats all on you my man. Theres no way to know what will happen.

Wow lots of advice there mate thanks! So to start, I’ve found a few slighlty cheaper batteries which I’ll go with https://rcscrapyard.com/batteries/7...5200-mah-hard-case-with-t-style-red-connector
And this charger https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12461062...rand=Unbranded&_trksid=p2332490.c100930.m5375

Then i can get the identical Receiver for £12 delivered so it’s just the esc I need which was the one from Banggood website I linked.
That brings me in just under the £100 budget which is my limit for this (I’ve only spent 1/4 of that on both my Nitro so far lmao 😂) which may leave enough for the relevant programming card for that esc I mentioned!
But, on the subject of ESCs, this one I have here seems to work when it’s plugged in- the fan starts and runs, the motor flicks and beeps(must be a check for position or something?) plus the orange LED on the bottom of the esc lights up along with the voltage on the red/black wires coming back at a steady 5.05v so I’m thinking maybe that’s ok? Is it worth repairing the wire and risking it?

Amazon has that lipo for cheaper. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Zeee-7-4V-...B08X4HDVBW,B07SKN9J4B,B08DHZCGCN&srpt=BATTERY

Thats up to you mate. theres no telling what caused the initial meltdown. could have been something shorting out in the receiver and the ESC might be ok. Worst case is you smoke a £12 RX 🤷‍♂️

Zeee LiPo is good 👍

I personally would not buy that charger. I bought 2 of them back when I was new in the hobby and they are both POS. The voltage drifts on them a fair amount. I actually still own them and the only thing I would trust them with these days is charging NiXX or PB batts. The Hobbyking charger is only £10 more. Will that charger work? Yeah but eventually when the voltages start to drift it will start damaging you lipos and you'll notice them not lasting as long as they used to or prematurely puffing.

I didnt see any link about a banggood ESC. Ill have to go back and look.

Ok, I saw it and honestly it looks even worse than the Hobbyking brand one that you linked from their website. If you're not gonna go with a Hobbywing then out of those two Id get the Hobbyking brand ESC.

I’ll check out that charger mate defo but the hobby king site had a load of stuff out of stock and on back order which means basically order and they’ll send it whenever they restock their lines... tbh I was just going off reviews as I honestly don’t have a clue how to tell if it’s gonna be any good or not!!! Don’t know whether it’s worth trying the existing esc as the same one new is around £45 which was about the same as the hobbywing esc was... I know what you’re saying-pay cheap and get cheap, I just can’t justify sinking much more money into it tbh buddy. Alongside the money I’ll be putting into the nitros too lol 😂

You can use the charger to charge your glow plug ignitor and receiver battery. ;)

Hobbykings website will tell you if their items are in stock or on backorder. I order lipos from there ocassionally and I buy all my wire from them too.

The particular issue I had with them you wouldnt know by looking at it online. Unless your in to amateur electronics you probably still wouldnt know they have that issue. I should say "At least they had that issue 10+ years ago when I bought them.

The Hobbywing ESC on Hobbykings website that I linked was only £33 and it can handle twice as much current as the original one.

I completely understand mate. You gotta do what you think is in line with your budget. If your going to order a £17 ESC though Id order the Hobbyking brand ESc instead of the one from Banggood. Theyre both the same price more or less.

The esc you linked AND the one I linked from hobbyking are on backorder mate, so it’s either the Banggood one or the more expensive ones (there are some cheap ones on eBay but they look too sus even to me lol)
As someone who isn’t even an amateur electronics person I wouldn’t know how to tell they will have problems either haha 😆
