Ok so my spray booth is almost complete....Ill be posting some video footage of that eventually but the question I have right now is about respirators. I went out to home depot yesterday and bought this respirator. http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc...splay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

That model says its for spray painting and pesticides but I wanna make sure that one will work. They have one more respirator there thats more expensive that says its for spray painting and pesticides also but in addtion is also good for asbestos, ammonia, lead, and other sorts of nasty stuff like that.

So the question is, is the one I linked gonna be sufficent or should I take it back and exchange it for the more expensive model linked here

oh yea that will work. i use one like that for working with fiberglass resin it really depends on the cartrige used but you should have no problem with just paint

you must be on the dark theme. i can't read any of your post after "bought this respirator"

the yellow and white are to bright.

^^+1^^ Hard to read. The type of respirator doesn't matter as much as the type of cartridge filter you are using. I would recommend a vapor/gas type cartridge as these work very well for painting applications. This is what we use at my facility for spraying prebond primers which are a chromic acid based paint. Can and will cause cancer so we have to use the best filtration possible. What you have will work for airbrush applications but it sounds like you want to be safety concious about it. Besides I can't imagine you will be in there 10-12 hrs at a time to really worry about health side effects but you never know.

Sorry I am on the dark mode....the other is to bright for me. The link button wasn't working properly so I was just winging it. The cartridges do say they are for spraypaint and pestisides on the one that I bought but it doesn't say anything about paint thinners and the more expensive one did list ammonia thats why I was wondering if I should spend the extra money on the other or if what I have is fine. I shouldnt be in doing it for more than a few hours at a time and even then not all at once with the drying of layers etc etc.

There should be colored bands on the outside of the cartridges. If so what color are they? Yellow/orange are for vapor and gas, purple are for asbestos type work and black are I believe organic particulate

What you have there says it also blocks organic vapors. It's about the same one I have, and with those filters I can't even smell high strength lacquer vapors.
You can always swap out the filter cartridges for other work.

They are black bands. it says they are for spray paints, pesticides, and organic vapor which I believe lacquer thinner is considered an organic vapor.

Well were gonna find out in a couple of hours. I'm preping a body right now :)

Ok, so I can still smell the fumes from the paint through the mask. Are you supposed to be able to smell them to some degree or should I be using filters that block the smell completely?

Just talked to a specialist at 3M apparently the masak I'm using is appropriate, he thinks that the fumes were getting in because I hadnt shaved? Guess its possible. I'll have to try it out and see if that really is the case

definitly need a shaved face at least where the mask touches your face. a good way to test the seal is to put the mask on fitted to your face remove the filters and plug the inlets with your hands then take a deep breath in if the mask sucks to your face and you can't get a breath you have a good seal.

Go shave.....and CUT YOUR HAIR you filthy hippie freak!!! :rolex:

LMAO, I'm bald but I did look like a dirty hippie that day...I dont think I had shaved in like 5 or 6 days

@Mayrider....yeah the 3M guy basically suggested the same thing. Ill try it out. I'm sure that must have been what it was.

Ummmm yup that was the problem....I trimmed down my goatee so its not big and bushy and I shaved the rest of my face....no more smell....It seems like its hard to breath in through that thing is that normal? I felt like i wasn't getting enough oxygen. The mask has only been used about 6-7 times now so I'm assuming the filters arent shot yet. If I leave it on for more than 5 or 10 minutes I feel like I'm really struggling to breathe.....is that normal or am I doing something else wrong?

Don't expect it to be like you're not wearing a mask. You are pulling air through the filtration system. You'll get used to it. Just take longer deeper breaths.
Those filters block everything. If you're only trying to block heavy dirt dust it will be much easier to breath.
