hey I've seen a few pics of crawlers with out springs on the shocks are there any advanteges to that
 
They are (more than likely) running internal springs. Theres three ways to do it, droop, wich is internal springs under the piston so the suspension "droops" out for travel....Semi droop wich is both under and above the piston. Or just internal sprung with the spring on top of the piston. I'm not at the moment but I've ran internal sprung on the front to give a little more clearance for the tires when turning.
