OK it am seriously tinkering with the idea of upgrading my savage with a new mill
i am looking at the STS .28 and the SH .28 but i would like to hear from ppl that have it and how well it holds a tune and power of it to please
and any other motors you have tried and like a lot ,i am looking to spend around 150 ,i am not racing just bashing but i want power too
thanks for any input ,
take care
rick

I'm considering a upgrade for my Savy too. I think I'm going to go the with the sh.28. Everything I've read about it and heard about it has been all good. Sounds like a good mill for the $.

i know i have been reading threads and posts about it all evening and i do believe i will get 1 when i get the cash ,seem to work very well ,

I'm in the market for to replace my Hyper 21.

I'm looking to spend about $150. Would you say the SH .28 or the Werks .27?
Or is there a better engine for $150?

I have the SH 28 in my Savage 25...and its a great mill (although the pullstart cord that comes with it breaks way to easy...but thats minor) I run 18/47 gearing which makes the savage to fast for the stock wheels (ballons) and will still pop wheelies.

the only down side to the engine is I've broken 3 4 bevel diffs so far and thats starting to get annoying!! Going to purchase a complete 4.6 4 bevel diff and see if I'm rebuilding them wrong or something.

EDIT: I got mine from world_hobby I think off ebay, ships from HK and got here in a couple of days. Cost $90USD + shipping and was the new blue top version. Can't beat it for that price!!

Yeh I've been doing some reeding, and everyone seems pretty happy with the STS .28.

With the money I save I may get it with a roto start on it.

How is this enging to tune?

I have the Hyper 21 and it seems pretty easy.

from what i hear it is very easy to tune and hold it just as well, but thye say not to hurry the break-in process take your time and take it easy ,

and this will be my next new mill i buy for my savage .

I ordered my STS .28

Got it for $121 shipped from Ebay

Was the only seller that said anything about an updated cooling head. Plus they had the tie rod ends I wanted so made it a little cheaper on shipping.

Look into the MACH .28, I have the MACH 26 in my savage it hauls butt, so I can only imagine that the .28 is even better. The engine holds a tune and starts easily. It sells for about 140.

From what I heard about the mach engines is that they become erratic tuners once you get a few gallons through them. I know my mach 15 in my xxx-nt was like that. A friend of mine ran one and said it was good when new, but now is just a PITA to try and run.

i just got a wasp .28 well actually 2 of them ,but i will have the STS.28 come springtime ,reguardless, lol

Will either one of these engines work with all the stock equip from the original .25 engine. Like engine mount, exhaust header, flywheel clutch. Thanks

(Coughs from the dust off of a four year old thread) welcome to RCNT and to answer your question...yes they will work just fine actually. The STS is actually a really good engine for the money actually.

haha didn't know that. So if its four years old are there better motors out for the same price. I'm just kind of getting back into the hobby and am not up to date. Thanks for coughing up the dust and replying though.

For the cost of a STS which is about $125 shipped off of Ebay they are pretty damn good. If you are looking to go crazy then the LRP .28R Spec 3 is bad to the bone or the Picco .28P3 is also a great engine. But both of those will run a bit more money. The LRP is about $170 and Picco is around $200.

were would you buy them. how much more powerful is the LPR .28R spec 3 compared to the first two is it worth the cost. also will all the stock equipment also fit onto that engine including roto start.

Mach 28 is a dud, or so I've been told. The mach 26 is a dinosaur and I'd grab one of the newer mach's instead (427). But they can be hard to find. May want to hit ebay if your seeking one of those. The LST2 ran them as a stock engine as did the muggy, but they came with a roto start that won't work on a savage. You can find pullstarts for them for around $20 though.

As for the other engines, not sure about the roto-start on any of them, the mount/flywheel will fit without issue. You will more than likely need a new header gasket with any engine your purchase if it's been that long since you've had yours apart.

The LRP28S3 is a stump puller and fun, but can wreak havoc on the savage drive train. Same goes for the picco 28 as it's stronger than the LRP. You'd almost be better suited with a more mild Mach 427, green or gold head if your seeking durability and decent power.

This is losi's 454 which is a clone of the LRP28S3:

LRP's new 30 that I believe is replacing the 28S3, more power and from what I've seen in vids and heard/read, it's peak RPM's are pretty close as well:

At hobby people a bit cheaper:

Here's the LRP28:

I have two of these. One in my savage and one in my aftershock. Both trucks are pretty highly modified for bashing, but the engine throws them around like a rag doll.

Picco 28:

If you really want to go nuts, RB TM278:

Never had one, but any RB I've heard in a vid, it sounds like it's seconds away from exploding, then you see the owner really hammer it and it just screams even more. A little to rich for this bashers blood though.

This would be a more budget minded engine, but should be a good one:

I have an XTM 24.7 (which is about 2 steps down from that one) and it's a decent little engine. It's my savage winter engine.

Another budget engine:

Not awesome, but not bad either. Plenty of power for a typical savage basher.

I also am looking to get a new motor for my savage. You guys have some good info on here. Was wondering would those also be good for racing or just bashing. Whats a better race engine.
