Lets say that I give someone here $150 to buy their next RC, they can buy any type or brand that they want on one condition:

Either brave the used market and buy something that might need work, or explore the Amazon/Bangood market and buy something brand new, but might need upgrades just to stay in one piece.

I know which of these I'd go with, but I'll share that later.

Definitely going used but from known good places for good used gear or from RC shops that have used for sale which is usually other local racers upgrading. The last 2 cars I've bought were "Used" but one was brand new but assembled and the other only needed minor work and I've bought 2 brand new kits still in box/bags sealed that were "Used".

Good thinking there, its easier to see judge an RCs condition in person, plus stuff on eBay goes for silly prices imo especially Traxxas. RCTech is a pretty good place to go for older race models.

do NOT USE BANGOOD is complete frustration, you get whatever rock they send you and thats that. no customer service, no returns no nothing. i have a post on the forums with a chat log from bangood
it was the WORST shopping experience I've ever had. ended up chalking it up as a loss and turned it into a project. i would highly advise you get a broken rc in trade and repair that yourself as you would have a better product and less anger and frustration

Thats technically cheating...but I did say Amazon, good pick!

I've gone down both routes and generally gravitate towards used. This Redcat was just $125, came with a handful of upgrades, all electronics, and outside of the stock receiver/controller going out it has held up better than any of my Bangood crawlers (which would easily cost more than $125 once you dig into upgrades).

I can find a used RC that I am more than capable of judging it's worth. Banggood is a crap shoot and the odds are definitely not in your favor. And even if you do get a working RC from them, it's still a

A used truck that after I fix it will cost more than new or something completely unsupported. I've been down both roads already. I would say, no thank you.

I would buy a used roller from fleabay.
That's how I got my V3 K6 slider/roller. It's been a forever build. It was a good price on a good roller. But when it's done it'll be really good. Learned it had a bent F shock tower, bad F bulkhead & messed up L F shock. Musta took a hit & owner punted it.

What really bothers me about Bangood RCs is that their electronics are all weird sizes. I have a bin of spares, but if I buy an HBX 12345 and the electronics go out I'm out of luck. I had good luck with the order/delivery with my WPL C74...but your picture sums up my experience with it. Just sell me the body for $30 so I can drop it on something decent.

Used (hobby grade)
But it depends what kind of car we talking about. Price range.
If we are talking about amazon, are we talking the no name china brands? or are we talking hobby grade brands?

150 bucks. Ok.

Amazon "junk" route:

Hyper Go 16BM - 16th scale - Brushless - 4WD - 3S - comes with 2 batteries. - 149.99

Popular amazon, china brands;: Hyper Go, WLToyz, DeeRC, Hailboxing, Hosim. Most likely rebranded copies of each other.

- No Replacement parts available (if so, it is only online and direct from China)
- Hobby Shops do not stock parts for those
- Electronics are trash
- Included charger (USB) dies within a few uses
- People at the track will look at you funny if you got one of these
- If you go to a local hobby shop around, and you go in looking for help, they will say, nope, can't help ya out. Because the electronics are a weird setup and can't be used with hobby grade electronics. 5 wire servos is the most common, and 2 in 1 esc and receiver combos.

Used:
Traxxas Slash 2wd, brushed, pre owned. Good condition. 142.50 (current bid)

Hobby Grade
Replacement parts out there everywhere
Upgrade parts are nice
Faster
reliable
People race these
You will have more fun
People won't look at you weird and you will get compliments.

You can find Traxxas 2wds for 100 - 150 easily. Same with Arrma 4x2s.
Arrma gorgon is a bit above 150. I think its like 169 or something currently.

You can find mini crawlers in that price range. Usually axials are like 120 bucks.

When the WPL trucks came out, the C16 and C24 made them popular because the kits were like $35, and it does have a cool looking body. What they did is basically ripoff the Tamiya Bruiser body and shrank it down.

They really should have stuck with the $35 kit range, thats what a decent model costs, I can't fathom buying an RTR from them for $80. My first WPL was one of their D12s which basically fell apart on me over time, even being driven "scale" like you would a Tamiya.

I saw a a RC10B6.4 roller, couple bodies, very little use the bottom of the chassis didn't even look like it had ran on dirt for $150... I almost grabbed it but before I made up my mind it was gone.... There's a excellent condition Ogio 9800 Rig bag for $175 right now too... there's always some great deals on RCTech... I'm on there as much as here.

I stay away from ebay for most things... sometimes for specialty things or old stuff but not for RC... it's all over priced and too prone to scams.

I also stay away from FB marketplace.... BUT... there are private buy/sell groups I'm part of as they are far more legit and have posting requirements.
