I would recommend a brass brush if you're using a steel one and slowest possible speed. If you accidently get through the thin outer plating it will ruin the tip. Soft brass wheel will prolong the tips life. :2cents:
Good tip, I do use the brass brush but never thought about the speed. I don't have to clean them very often but I will pay attention. Usually wiping it on damp sponge is sufficient.

Yea have to be careful with the tip coating that actually helps with bonding the solder to wire. You brush to much that coating will come off and the tip will be no good as @Greywolf74 mention
