I run spektrum myself, and as yet i have never run a failsafe with that setup, nor have i felt or sensed the need to.
A good strong throttle return spring however would be a darn good idea.

wont hurt... they are cheap and easy to install

just have to be careful it wouldn't interfere with the built in failsafe on 2.4ghz is all, hence why i do not run one

I run a fail safe on my race revo and BB Maxx with my spektrum 3.0ds. So far I havent had any kind of interference issues. Although since the TX has all kinds of bells and whistles it give you PLENTY of warning before a catastrophe occurs........ That is with the exception of smacking a concrete culvert... :\
