The spur gear is held to that star shaped piece of plastic on the main drive shaft with 4 screws. To get that star shaped piece off the shaft, you have to loosen and remove the part that hold the bearing and shaft where the star piece attachs. That piece is held on by two screws from the bottom...

If it was me shopping, I'd go with the HPI. I am not a big fan of the Traxxas road cars. The Traxxas trucks, however, are a different story.

Sounds like he is using it as a quasi fuel float bowl. That engineering works pretty good in carburators in cars, so it seems like a gerry rigged part might solve the Revo left lean problem.
