hey guys

its time for me to get a new engine

my HPI s25 has bit the bullet cracked piston and scored sleeve, and the sleeve is stuck so i can't get it out to change it ( tried everything to remove it )

my thunder tiger pro 21 is faring no better i can't full throttle it without it making some weird noise then cutting almost instantly ( i only use the thunder tiger for low speed crawling now )

I'm looking at a few engines i only got a budget of around £60 really tight budget right now and I'm happy to buy a used engine to get my savage back up and running

ok engines I'm looking at new and used

  1. Thunder Tiger Pro-50BK - used ( will it fit in the savage engine mount or better yet even in the truck )
  2. Thunder Tiger Pro .21 BXR - new & used
  3. Thunder Tiger Pro .28 BXR - used
  4. Ansmann .28 - used
  5. Ansmann .21 - used
  6. Picco P2 - used 2 engines just have to swap the crank shafts over - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141316239975?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
  7. SH .21 - new
  8. SMT .21 cxp - new
  9. SMT .27 cxp - new

I'm looking for more torque than speed aslong as the truck still shifts into second gear ( even if i have to adjust it to shift ) I'm happy

Don't bother with used engines or piecing together used engines if you can buy new.
With your budget I think this would be a great choice. :mustache:

Any idea what caused your other engine to expire?

thx my only issue is i can't buy anything from outside the UK over £15 other wise i get hit by VAT and import duty making it not worth it,

what about the SMT engines as they are re-branded SH mills

smt .21

smt .27

with my S25 not sure one day the tune just went and it would not run at WOT leaning itself out then trying to stall
after trying to get it to run then i took it inside to inspect the engine & found metal shavings from somewhere inside the crank case and noticed some cracks around the edge of the piston

my pro .21 it lost compression so i tried re pinching it and over did it.
upon initially inspecting it i noticed some one installed the con rod backwards so the oil holes were not getting sufficient oil ( the con-rod was really discolored due to heat build up and the bushings were shot ) i switched it out with a new one i had lying around from a few years back

i have re pinched my pro 12 engine in my tamiya TGS since then with no issue just the first time i was impatient and trying to rush doing it

One thing I've learned when buying used engines, hope for the best, assume the worst. You never know how badly you're newly purchased used engine has been beaten down until you open it up. And every seller shares the same claim "it only has a gallon through it".More often than not, its not worth the gamble.

Thunder Tiger Pro-50BK - used -It might fit but not without modifications and it's used. I'd pass on it.

Thunder Tiger Pro .21 BXR - new & used The TTR .21 is a good engine, easy to tune, great for buggies but lacks the huevos needed to push a Savage around new or used. I'd pass.

Thunder Tiger Pro .28 BXR - used- A little more spunk than a Pro .21 and probably would work decent with a Savage, new. Used, I'd pass.

Ansmann .28 - used -I have no experience with Ansmanns but they're used. I'd pass.
Ansmann .21 - used

I'd pass on these two most definitely. Looks like they were rode hard and put away wet.

SH .21 - new -A decent engine, good parts support but like the TTR Pro .21 probably under powered for a Savage.

SMT .21 cxp - new- I'm not all experienced with these engines either but they are new..maybe? I'd go with the .27 if you choose this route.
SMT .27 cxp - new

I would not recommend any of those engines. Find a way to get an SH 28, LRP, Losi 454, or even a Force 28... Maybe a TT .28. But new. Used is always a crapshoot..

I think I saw the Ansmann .28 you were looking at, listed as used but looks like it was never ran? I'd give it a maybe. I found an old thread regarding Ansmann engines you might wanna check out.

i used to run them in my ansmann kryptonite there the same as the HPI F series engines

i always liked them its a shame they dont make them anymore good budget engines
