RC Driving Style
boy i got greedy gettin back into r/c doin 4wds. 4got how much
different a beast 2wd is.

drove my losi stadium truck for the 1st time out there and despite the
results i really enjoyed myself. coulda run novice, but really didnt
want to.

got there lil after 10 and setup. got ready to go out and start shakin
the truck down when i heard grindin in tranny. checked slipper, clutch,
no avail. figured i munched a diff gear at the hands of a rock gettin
stuck in the left rear last wkend.

took 4ever to tear it down (eh, good time to learn the car), yup, few
teeth were laid over like sharks, got the parts from LHS, put it all
back 2gether (need new diff balls as well) and apparently the diff screw
was also compromised, b/c just near completion, cinch the screw done
and SNAP, yeash. went bought that (amazin how they have all the parts,
thumbs up). fixed it, now that the back 1/2 is rebuilt and brake
adjusted (had to change freq to somethin no1 was usin, syn is so nice),
it was now time to race. (also had glued a set of new tire/wheels in
that time as well). managed to stuff a graphite pivot block in there
over the stock plastic piece.

so yet again, no practice. hadnt raced in over 2mths, and not since
early 90s w/a 2wd offroad car of any type.

round 1: hopin the engine was good enuff to make laps (likely rich-only
6-7tanks on it), outta the box setup and all i went out.

well the track had started to dry out since i last looked at it but i
figure it wouldnt have mattered. YES, the stock tires are AWFUL!
couldnt turn (stock servo prolly didnt help either) and slipper was just
a lil tight-combine that w/tires, couldnt get off any corner w/o it
wanting to swap ends.

i did get good practice in moving outta other's way though. motor was
rich, pure pig down the straight, no big deal really kept the power
under control all day especially b/c of lack of grip. depressin 9 laps
(TQ was 14, fella was well clear of the rest, pack was all at 13 for
most part), fast lap only 31sec, leaders were doin 22-23s.

oh well.

round 2: well w/stock rubber off and edges/bowties on i hoped for more
grip and thus some better spd and thus not total embarassment. gave the
motor 1hr in to open it up a lil more. well the tires were a terribly
good investment. yeh there might be a tire out there just a lil better,
but these were worth it. now that i had some traction, i exposed the
next problem. truck just would not steer, sometimes just couldnt use
throttle/brake to snap the truck around, it just wouldnt steer. wasn't
sure if this was still the wrong set of fronts? but was sure that box
setup was way off for this surface.

11 laps @ 5m27s i believe, so yes a nice improvement. however still last
(not incld'g DNSs) overall, 2 laps off the field. fast lap now was a
25sec, however still 2secs off most every1 else.

round 3: started askin around on setup to try and get some more speed
outta the car, i had the red springs in the box, when i saw every losi
on them in the front, i slapped em on. no change in position, all still
factory, but in hopes that it would help some more.

i was told by many that the factory oil (30wt on a good cold day) is
way off whats needed. need to play up near 40 on all 4 corners. no
time/energy to do that. the clouds had gone long b4 and i was fried
after all that tranny work.

well went out, the truck just a tick better, another 1hr in on the high
needle nettin a motor just a tick better (still rich). made a couple
mistakes 2wards end but finished @ 11/5m17s. not the 12 i wanted but an
improvement. didnt improve fast lap, still a 25.x

main: 15min job. despite her feelin bad, was gonna have my girl pit
me, an rx batt change and tx charge. another 1/4turn out on slipper was
the only change to truck. motor got 1 more hr in, as it was right around
190-195 after end of round all day. no susp or alignment changes as i
accepted my pace this day, will just work to keep gettin faster.

went out immediately to warm up, and after 2 laps or so of warmup the
truck did seem a lil quicker, yes lettin the engine run a lil bit help i
was keepin pace w/a few of the other trucks. and then it happened...

...1 day i will run a main at pitstop. the lil double that had been
very rutted w/hunks of clay taken out of it all day wasn't fun the entire
day, but i came off it during warmup bicycle and landed flush on the
right side like i did a few times, got to next right turn and the wheel
collapsed.

those cheap as ---- turnbuckles every1 said to replace immediately bit
me. the right front upper control rod snapped flush at the thread stop.
gameover, no spare links ready to snap on.

so i was forced to pack up my stuff while the main went off.

No videos i'm afraid, pulled camera out, but kate was just not well at
all to shoot anythin for me. i didnt have any1 else w/me runnin that i
could film. i would have like to tape the buggy main but that was my
marshall duty.

think they ran 10min, 2.5 cars runnin at end. pretty wild. they are
gettin faster and faster around that place. prolly too fast.

all in all good times, i really enjoyed myself (unlike back in june when
i had huge allergic reaction probs that caused me to go home early, some
thought i had left early in disgust when in fact i prolly wouldnt have
lasted the 5min MT main b/c eyes were swellin bad. in fact made it to
sheetz and she had to drive rest of way home back to MD b/c i couldnt
see i was in so much pain).

its a very 1st class group of people (w/ur normal exceptions, but their
just kids). the new xponder sys was very nice. got the mic finally
workin right, needs some bigger or relocated speakers for
announcements!!! i like the place and it only pains me that i had to
work 2 sats/month or else i'd be there most every wkend (w/permission of
course).

great times, hope others enjoyed it as well. also look to have some
video shot next time.

2wd losi setup ideas (looked at all drake's charts, and doesn't seem to
have a setup for this hard packed/grooved surface in tight config)?

thx

Sounds like a good shake out.
There is always a lot to learn with a new RC. Look at the bright side, you got to race and you found out some good setup info. Next time out you'll be better prepared and get some better lap times.

Keep up the good work.

Ya, I love the edge/bowtie set-up on my xxx-nt, works awesome. Never had a problem w/ the turnbuckles tho...

Nice write up! I don't race, but it's interesting to hear how a day plays out for a normal guy. In all the mags, you hear how pro's do this and that.

My only question, why didn't you run in the engine more before racing? That can't help matters much as most engines act goofy through the first half gallon or so, then they level off tuning wise and pick up in power.

At least you had fun and didn't have your eyes swell shut again...
