Help Carb needles question

i think my car's lsn is running too rich, my question is which side to turn to make it leaner??? should i screw it or unscrew it??? any way, i dont really understand why there should be a needle inside the carb, i understand the hsn, to regulate incoming fuel, but the lsn i dont really understand its main function..... any hints, tips or comments are helpful!!!
