how do races work?

Please explain how races work? I've read a bit about it and it seems there is an A main and B main etc, (as many as needed?) Who goes in which race? Is that determined by your qualifying? How is the qualifying done?

It depends on the format. Around here we have three chances to qualify. The computer then sorts racers by their best time, and put them into the mains. Fastest 10 in the A, next fastest 10 in the B and so on. Then the B main is ran. Sometimes we'll have some dropouts in the A, so we can 'bump' the faster guys from the B into the A if they wish.

All races are run differently.
In a club race it takes 3 or more cars to make a class. Usually each class will run 2-3 races then a Main Event.

If there is a lot of cars racing they will brake them up into even amount groups and letter them A,B,C, and so on.

If its a small class everyone runs all the races the winners may get to start in font of the pack. If there are several groups in a class usually the top 3-5 in each class group will got to the A Main the rest of the groups are broken down to B,C, and so on. Doing this keeps people competing with others of the same skill level.

Long and drawn out but thats how most races work. There are always exceptions and different rules wherever you go.

Thanks for the replies. I think our system is probably like the methods you all mentioned. One more question, if one person gets 1st in the A main and another person gets 1st in the B main are they given the same points? It seems to me the B main would be an easier race and so it shouldn't be worth as many points.
