My New Storm

Hi,

I picked up a GS Storm today. I took the hobby shop owner's advice and the thing came pre-assembled. He said "let it idle through the first two tanks, then run it really rich through the next one, then tune it for speed." With that, he sent me home.

Unfortunately, it seems I needed a bit more help than that.

I glued the wheels on.
I put batteries in.
I put fuel in.

I have a D-cell glow plug igniter. I turned the radio on, turned the car on, and then pulled the hand crank a few times to get the thing going. After a few false starts and after playing with the nozzle screw a few times, the thing started and ran for awhile. It was getting pretty hot, so I wanted to turn it off. It's then that I realized I needed a lot more information, starting with "how do I turn it off?"

So I'm new and I'm looking for a bit of help. I need the very basic questions answered: how do I turn the thing on safely? How many turns does the screw get?

The very basics. The manual doesn't even tell you where to put the glow plug igniter. Granted, I figured it out pretty fast, but these are the kinds of questions I have.

The manual is full of typos and has very little useful information. "Don't drink fuel"? C'mon, duh.

This seems to be a pretty common model, yet I've not yet found a "very beginner's manual to the GS Storm." Any help? Pretty please?

Turn the engine off by putting ur finger or something over the stinger to clog stinger or pinch the fuel line to stop it from getting gas.

No offense, but if you posted this on banned rc forums, you would SERIOUSLY get some chewing out for asking those questions. I just found it funny and in no way meant to offend you.

Ahhh comon man, he's a newbie as we all were, lol. He's got some learning tog o but might just give ya a run for ya money one day, lol

I know how it is to have your car and the bench, and want answers now. Play time is limited. Since you said you didn't know where the glow ignitor went to begin with so I'll assume your a complete

I also know how it is to find a new fourm and not know your way around. some people will reply "read the FAQ damnit!".

But you think to yourself what s is a faq? and where is it? lol

Well, good luck on your storm, I belive it is a good nitro rig however like you say instructions are somewhat "lacking"

They must assume you know what rich lean, glow igniter, after run oil and stuff like that means.. Well a lot of first timers don't.

Here's some things that got me.
ALWAYS! always check with a good plug and make sure your ignitor is charged. A good plug should glow bright orange, or white.

You bought a durable buggy, but every buggy has a weak spot, expect breakage, and to buy replacement parts. These things go from 20mph to 70 depending on gearing, cold plastic + still object = broken parts heheh.

Pull starter, I went through 3 of these until I fugred out that they should be THAT hard to pull. If the first few pulls are easy, then it gets significantly tougher to pull, pull the plug, flip it upside down (cover head with rag) and pull to empty out the fuel. Then go again. If you just try to pull through the tough spots, you will breka your pull starter or the connecting rod.

When learning how to tune, rich is good. It may not have much power, but if you think your running it too lean, richen it up, go on the safe side VS buying a new motor You will learn after time and be comfortable leaning it out later (trust me it will come)

Last of all I included some links for you oto get you started. Me, I read every post I could find on this board, and followed links at night, then ran my buggy during the day. I found that almost every question I had throughout the day was answered here buried somewhere in old posts

Hrmph

Okay, I have figured out enough to be able to turn the car on reliably now. I ran through the break-in period (three full tanks of gas, the last two with a few little forward movements).

The trouble I'm having now is this:
a) squeezing the throttle trigger does nothing (not even mechanically)
b) pushing the throttle trigger forward sends the car forward (though slowly).

In other words, the only way to make my car go forward is to put the remote in reverse.

What's going on? This doesn't make much sense. All settings on the remote are at their factory default (except the steering sensitivity, which I bumped all the way up from its setting of 60 or whatever).

Any ideas??? Did I get a bum ride?

Did you check the trim on your radio? Is it possible that you have it trimmed wrong?

Check the batteries in your car. It is possible specially if it is cold, that they are worn out/dead, and you are getting interference. Mine new batteries went in two tanks because of the cold.


Sometimes the linkage isn't adjusted properly form the factory. I would suggest you check your linkage. Their are adjustments on the wires that move the throttle on the carb,a nd the break.

Make sure your trims are centered, and the batteris in the car are good and fresh.

Take the wire linkage off the servo. Now pull the trigger, and see if the servo moves correctly with the linkage off, then oyu kow it is just an adjustment issue.

SAme problem with me to man. Your servo is reversed. Look it up in the JR Manual. it tells hows to reverse the Throttle Servo. When you push it forward its suppose to put on brake whoch requires little servo movement and its not opening your carb very much. So just REVERSE THROTTLE SERVO using the remote. By the way its 6:32am and I'm watching Pokemon for reasons i cant explain maybe it has something to do with the insomnia

gotta catch em all Waste Land?

First of all, run a search on this website for Storm Newbie stuff. I started out here and these guys pretty much held my hand through the break in process of my car. (Thanks again everyone). Whatever you do, never turn your engine off that way ever again. easiest way to shut it off is cover the little hole that exhaust comes out of with a rag or your shoe.

My servo was also reversed when it came from the factory. Look it up in the manual, i dont remember how to do it except it might be the C button, dont hold me to it tho. Before you start really breaking in the engine, go to the hardware store, and buy a piece of foam about 4"x2"x3" and attach it to your front bumper. You are going to run into things and i found this helped a lot at hitting the curb at 20+ mph.
