Wolcott Hobbies hosted the 2004 ROAR Region 1 Electric Off-road Regional Championships on September 18 and 19. For the week leading up to the event, we were all watching the weather forecast as the tail end of Hurricane Ivan stretched out over the east coast tossing heavy down pours our way. Saturday morning, with the track underwater and washing away, the racers stuck it out, waiting, patiently for the rain to pass. Finally, mid day, there was a break in the weather. But the track was under water. On any regular race day, everyone would have packed it in and gone home. But under the guidance of Lester of Wolcott Hobbies www.wolcotthobbies and Chris Marcy of RC Madness www.rcmadness.com and Todd Anderson of RC Excitement www.rcexictement.com , the racers started working on the track. With the help of three competing businesses and teams, the track was brought back to racing condition in no time. They were able to run off two rounds of qualifying with the help of the Wolcott Hobby's 'sun like' lighting system. The raffles and door prizes were handout out on Saturday night in appreciation to those dedicated racers that weathered the storm and worked to help get the event on its feet.

Some notable racers trackside were Mike Dumas, Todd Anderson, Chris Marcy, Mark Smyka, Lester Bastenbeck, Mark Westerfield, Nick Leone, Mike Valentine and Todd Putnam.

I arrived on Sunday for two rounds of qualifying and the mains which included double A Mains in official ROAR classes. Officially, Regional Championships were awarded in modified truck, modified buggy, stock truck, stock buggy and modified 4wd. Additionally, for demonstration and testing purposes, open brushless truck and open E-Maxx were also awarded Provisional Championships.

Sunday was a typical early autumn New England type day with a slight chill in the air and a brisk wind with beautiful blue sky, no humidity and about 60 degrees. There was no evidence of the torrential rain from the day before on the track. The traction was high, the jumps were nicely spaced and constructed to require timing but not disruptive to the flow of the track. Wolcott typically has a huge track where 1/8th buggies pull only 35 second laps. Wolcott reduced the size of the track for the electrics to give a nice balance of speed, set-up and skill.

The qualifiers were run with the IFMAR starting system. For the most part drivers were able to negotiate the track without interfering with other drivers. There were a few instances of vehicle landing on each other and such, but then again, racing is a contact sport. The mains were run from a standing start with a nice spacing between starting positions. The grid was placed on the longest straight in the layout which was in the middle of the track. Most mains had the typical first turn pile up as they tried to manage the 180 degree hair pin at the end of the straight. In most mains, the leaders walked away from the pack as the pack was sorted out by the corner workers. Typical evidence that you can't win the race in the first turn but you can certainly lose it.

The point system in the double A Mains were as follow: First place in the double mains were awarded 1 point, second received 2 points and so on. The final standing were determined by the cumulative points of both mains with ties going to the single best run in a main.

The E-Maxx main featured Mike Cronin with the TQ and the 2004 ROAR Region 1 Provisional Open E-Maxx Championship. His beautifully crafted mostly aluminum E-Maxx was an absolute rocket ship on the straights and collected big air on the jumps. This is defiantly a class that can get large in a hurry. Mike Cronin is 2004 ROAR Region 1 Open E-Maxx Provisional Champion.

Stock Truck TQ Matt Cziekowski had tough battles fighting it out with Nick Leone and Mark Westerfield through both mains. Mark Smyka was able to get through the first turn pile up and walk away with the first main catching the pack in just three laps. Again in the second main Mark Smyka almost lap the field at the four minute mark and cruised to a sweep of both mains. Mark Smyka is the 2004 ROAR Region 1 Stock Truck Off-road Regional Championship.

The first modified truck A Main had TQ Todd Anderson beat the first turn to take the lead and stay there. Mark Symka made a last minute push, but Todd ran a smooth line and could not be caught. In the 2nd main, Todd Anderson ran into traffic allowing Mark Smyka to walk away. Although Marks diff started making noise toward the end of the run, he was able to control the throttle to keep it together. Dan Laurence had strong showing placing 3rd in both mains. Mark Smyka is the 2004 ROAR Region 1 Modified Truck Off-road Regional Champion.

The Brushless Truck A Main fell the same way many of the other mains did. The first turn pile up left TQ Chris Proctor clear of the turn and walked away with the main. Joe Grandieri made a strong showing moving from 6th to 2nd. Pete Fratta made a late race charge but landed in 3rd. Chris Proctor is the 2004 ROAR Region 1 Provisional Open Brushless Truck Off-road Champion.

The 4WD drive mains saw Don Lavrence run a clean sweep of both mains. Keith Frissora rans solidly in 2nd place for both mains. The TQ for 4wd is Rick Birk, but Don Lavrence is the 2004 ROAR Region 1 Modified 4WD Off-road Champion.

TQ Nick Leone fell on hard times in both modified buggy mains with Mark Westerfield making an A main sweep, nearly uncontested. Dan Laurence held onto 2nd place after fendinf off Jimmy Willis’ late second main push. 2004 ROAR Region 1 Modified Buggy Off-road Champion.

The stock buggy mains were small, but interesting. It seemed like the 4 cars were magnets for each other and that no driver wanted the win. TQ Jimmy Willis and Mark Westerfield finished with a points tie. Jimmy Willis is the 2004 ROAR Region 1 Stock Buggy Off-road Champion based on a tie breaker best single main run.

Todd Putnam of Putnam Propulsion www.putnampropulsion.com provided the hand out stock motors and helped work the tear down of the top three stock motors. Yes, the top three motors in the stock truck class were unwound and stacks measured. I also saw Todd helping out with motors for anyone that asked. Todd tuned stock and modified motors for racers and even lent motors to those in need. Thank you Putnam Propulsion for your trackside assistance. You continue to be an asset to the region.

We appreciate Team Scream Batteries www.teamscreamcellmatching.com , Fusion Batteries www.fusionbatteries.com, Putnam Propulsion www.putnampropulsion.com and RC Driver Magazine www.rcdriver.com for their generosity in donating doors prizes. Please support these companies as they realize that it is important to provide for these larger events.

The sportsmanship of this event was at a high level. Racers were courteous of corner workers, the computer didn't have any hiccups and the racers had a great time. The shop was fully stocked and ran specials on the tire of choice as well as motors and brushes. Wolcott Hobby ran a very successful event. They have clearly established themselves as premier facility in Region 1. With a carpet track on the way for year-round racing, look for big things to come to Wolcott Hobby.
