Waterproofing your RC

January 17, 2007 - Tips

Winter is here, and every year people ask in the forums, “How do I waterproof my rc?”. While most will not recommend operating your R/C through snow, ice, rain or mud - it is very possible to run in and through these condition IF you take the necessary steps in protecting your equipment. This quick and easy guide will show you a fool proof way of waterproofing your servos.

To start there are two things needed to use this method:

  • X-acto knife or razor
  • Plasti Dip

Plasti Dip and servo

Plasti Dip is a flexible, synthetic, multi-purpose rubber coating that exhibits excellent moisture, acid, alkaline, and abrasion resistance and comes in various colors: black, red, blue, yellow, white, and clear. You can find Plasti Dip in most stores such as Home Depot, Lowes, Harbor Freight Tools, Menards and many other stores as well as online. Ok enough about Plasti Dip lets get on with the waterproofing!

De-anodizing and Polishing Aluminum

October 11, 2006 - Tips, Wheels

On my latest RC project I decided to de-anodize all of the purple parts to reveal the bare metal finish. Personally I like the look of bare metal better over a colored part. Many of you are familiar with the oven cleaner method of stripping off anodizing but in this article I’ll cover the often talked about Greased Lightning method for those who have not used it before. After stripping off the anodizing I will also go over one of the methods of polishing the bare aluminum part to a mirror shine.

So let’s get started. For de-anodizing you will need

  • Greased Lightning Cleaner - available in either spray bottle or gallon at your local home improvement store.
  • A few large paper clips and binder clips
  • Plastic container that is large enough to completely submerge your part
  • Green Scotch Brite pads
  • Denatured Alcohol

Backlight kit for DuraTrax Ice battery charger

October 6, 2006 - Tips

This how-to will show you how to replace your standard LCD display on your Duratrax IntelliPeak Ice battery charger with a backlight LCD. For the life of me I can’t figure out why the manufacturer doesn’t do this. I bought the kit on eBay from Hobikit, it was like $22 and a couple for shipping. $26 bones for lights…yeah it’s worth it to me! The directions are very clear and easy to follow and they do state, that this is not a novice mod. Patience is required and I will touch on that in a bit. Anyway here’s the Duratrax IntelliPeak Ice opened up:

The two wires just above the big capacitor in the upper left corner is where you solder the inverter too, that was one of the trickiest parts, mainly cause my soldering iron isn’t the best: Click to continue »

Mix Your Own Custom Diff Fluids

March 14, 2005 - Tips

What do you do if you’re filling your diffs and your LHS doesn’t stock the
exact diff fluid you need? Or what if you’re in a hurry and you can’t wait
for the exact one you need to come in on order? Sure, you could make a
substitution for whatever you might have on hand and put the right stuff in
later, but let’s face it, changing diff fluids in your 8th scale buggy
isn’t easy. I think I can change the motor oil in my real car faster than
I could change the fluids in all three of my buggy diffs. If it’s such a
pain to change your diff fluid, you really should put the right stuff in
while you have it apart. So how do you do that when you don’t have the
exact kind you need on hand?

You also get about 1000ml for $8 as opposed to paying $12 for 100ml air filter oil marketed for RC Nitro. (You can pick up a quart at your local motorcycle shop.
